The Apple Watch’s Surprisingly Useful Remote App

What is the Remote App on an Apple Watch?

If you wear an Apple Watch, you’re already familiar with all the amazing things it can do. For example, your Apple Watch can tell time, track your health, pay for things, pass data to and from your iPhone, and even act as a remote control via the Remote app on the Apple Watch!

The tiny Remote app on the Apple Watch doesn’t look like much at first glance, but you can use it with your Apple TV or iTunes on a Mac (or both!). The remote app on Apple Watches can turn on an Apple TV, queue a playlist from iTunes, and even manage connected devices when you’re using Siri. But wait, there’s more!

Unexpected Apple Watch Remote App Features

The Apple Watch remote app doesn’t solely control many of your favorite Apple devices and services. For instance, the Apple Watch remote can also control lots of third-party devices. For example, using third-party apps like Alarm.com allows you to use the Apple Watch remote app to open and close your garage doors. Plus, you can even operate your BMW’s climate control system using the BMW i-Remote App. Keep reading to learn more about what the Apple Watch Remote app can do!

When it’s time to Netflix and chill, you can use your Apple Watch Remote app to turn on your Apple TV and open Netflix. Plus, you can even use the app to pause and resume your movie anytime, so you never miss a single scene.

All it takes is a tap on your Apple Watch to manage your iTunes library on your Mac or PC. Thanks to the Use the Apple Watch Remote app, you’ll never have to reach for your hardware remote or your iPhone or iPad.

Access the Viewfinder on your iPhone’s iSight Camera

Get ready to take the best selfies ever. Your Apple Watch can access the viewfinder on your iPhone’s iSight Camera. That way, you can prop up your camera on a rock or other object and snap a photo directly from your wrist!

HomeKit

Apple’s HomeKit framework simplifies home automation. When you use Siri, you can control your HomeKit connected devices with your voice. But instead of issuing voice commands through Siri on an iOS device, you can use your linked Apple Watch!

How to Launch the Apple Watch Remote

Ready to use the Apple Watch Remote app? To begin, launch Remote and follow the simple on-wrist directions to connect over your Wi-Fi network.

To control your Apple TV:

  1. Tap Menu to turn on the Apple TV.
  2. Then you can swipe and tap to open apps, start playback, pause, and so on.
  3. We especially enjoy fast-forwarding and rewinding by swiping a finger horizontally on the SWIPE area.

In the case of iTunes, you can control whatever’s playing from anywhere in your home, even if you aren’t in the same room as your Mac. We often use it to skip (or replay) a song during a party or while we are exercising.
